Ethical Pet Training
How to promote good behaviour in our dogs, horses and cats, without using aversive techniques

Many training techniques and tools are designed to cause fear, pain and discomfort - that's the way punishment works. Although it can be shown to stop behaviour, it can have many side-effects; and there are much kinder alternatives, that are equally effective.
Reward-based training isn't without it's complications, but ultimately it promotes good behaviour by making both the experience and the outcome a happy one for our pets. Whether you have a dog, horse or cat, this book will guide you through all the reasons why reward-based training is preferable to training that involves aversive stimuli, coercion and punishment.

We live with dogs, and play with them, and train them - but how much do we really understand them? What are they really thinking and feeling? This book is an exploration of dog emotions, and our emotions, and what that means for the care and training of our canine friends. As well as asking 'What are emotions?', this book also shows that our dogs are sentient, conscious beings. Parts two and three of Our Emotional Dogs include personal reflections from dog owners and dog professionals.
Reviews:
"This is a really unusual book full of true-life stories of people introducing dogs into their homes and how both they and the dog coped. I found it really interesting to compare experiences with other dog owners." - Lisa S
"Sarah is a fantastic dog trainer and her knowledge of canine behaviour really shines through in this book. Definitely well worth reading." - Katie A
"Very interesting insight into our dog's behaviour and how they might be thinking. It helped me understand how I could change things for the better." - Paul

Help! My Dog Has Issues
Help! My Dog has Issues
How to understand your dog, and find solutions to their problem behaviours
Now out of print.
Help! My Dog Has Issues is your guide to canine psychology, and dog-owner psychology (since we make up half of the team). This book covers everything from your dog's genetic ancestry, to the common causes of 'bad' behaviour. There's a ten-point plan to work through, to help you create solutions that are right for you and your dog.
This second edition of Help! My Dog Has Issues, has three new sections which focus on complex and distressing problems: grumpiness towards other dogs/ people/ animals etc when on a walk; separation anxiety; and toilet-training issues.
Praise for Help! My Dog has Issues:
"This is a gem of a book for anyone with a dog, or even thinking about getting a dog. Sensitively written, Sarah really helps you see the world from your dogs point of view as well as your own, making understanding their behaviour so much easier, shedding light on problems which otherwise can be difficult to figure out. Great practical advice on finding a way forward for you and your dog. Highly recommended!" - Dawn M
Please note, Help! My Dog Has Issues is no longer available as a paperback book or ebook. This was my first attempt at writing a dog training book, and as I've developed further as a trainer and behaviourist, some of my views have changed. So I decided to start again. Some of the information from this book will appear on this website, and some will form the basis of a brand new book. I'm glad this book helped so many people understand their dogs a little better, and I hope to help many more in the future with the new things I write!
